The Rochambeau Memorial Monument Project
Welcome to our special fundraising page. The Middlebury Historical Society, Inc., is engaged in adding a new Rochambeau monument to our town. We have had a modest monument since 1904, when the American-Irish Historical Society placed one on Breakneck Hill at the site of the 1781 (Camp 9, going) and 1782 (Camp 42, returning) encampments of General Rochambeau and the French army. This gift of France to the American cause clinched the Revolutionary War and was essential to the founding of our nation.
This monument will be one of the most glorious tributes to the French contribution to the founding of our nation in Connecticut, and along the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route through nine states and the District of Columbia.
Our landscaping design has been prepared by Abigail Adams and her team at A2 Land Consulting LLC of New Fairfield, Connecticut. Our chosen sculptor is Tony Falcone of the Falcone Art Studio, Prospect, Connecticut.
